John Mansfield

Pemmi-Con Guest of Honour John Mansfield has died, April 19th, in hospice care, in Winnipeg.

Best known as a convention runner, Mansfield chaired the Winnipeg in ’94 Worldcon bid and, subsequently, ConAdian, the 1994 Worldcon. He chaired Due North (2005) and OromoctoCon (1970). In 2011 John Mansfield was recognized with an Aurora Award for inventing the Aurora Award pin. Previously (1992) he received an Aurora Award for the Winnipeg in ’94 Worldcon bid committee.

John Mansfield was also a gamer, active in the Gaming industry. He ran his own game store in Winnipeg, Pendragon.

John attended his first convention in 1966. He got into fandom in the early days of the Ottawa SF Society, and was a member of the Alberta Science Fiction Society in the early 1970s. Over the years he traveled extensively to Worldcons, Star Trek conventions, and gaming conventions.

John Mansfield helped many people to enter fandom and he promoted Canadian fandom in all his endeavours.

“We were thrilled when John agreed to be Pemmi-Con’s Fan Guest of Honour. Both myself and my Co-Chair, Linda Ross-Mansfield, wanted to honour John Mansfield for all his fannish activities and we are both devastated by this loss.” — Robbie Bourget, Co-Chair.

Winnipeg is a very pedestrian friendly city. Visit the nearby Forks shopping and entertainment complex, where Winnipeg’s two rivers meet! And if you need some quiet green space, the sunken Japanese Garden on Carlton Street, in the Lakeview Square Development, is within easy walking distance. The Japanese Garden, inaugurated in 1974 to commemorate Winnipeg’s sister city status with Setagaya, Japan, is a lovely place to sit, reflect, and recharge.
